Stethoscope on 100 dollar bills symbolizing financial surveillance

If anyone was hoping to attend the Church and Pastoral Anniversary, planned at the Apostolic Ark Pentecostal Church by Reverend Marvel Johnson, it has been cancelled. That is probably because Marvel needs to report to prison.

One September 15, 2022, Marvel, a citizen of Jamacia was sentenced to 12 months in prison after being found guilty of making false statements to receive Medicaid benefits. Seems like the time doesn’t equal the crime, since he has been receiving fraudulent Medicaid benefits for over ten years!

Marvel Johnson was born in Jamaica. But our fraudster needed health insurance. In 2008, Marvel applied for health care benefits with the Connecticut Medicaid health care benefits program known as “Husky” using a false social security number. Enrollment was granted and maintained with no questioning from the agency responsible for administering Medicaid. In 2015, Marvel provided another false social security number in an attempt to receive retroactive insurance coverage for his recently born son.

Marvel did not receive the retroactive coverage for his son, but he and his family continued to remain enrolled in Husky. But all fraudsters eventually get questioned.  In 2018, a request for citizenship verification, from the Medicaid agency, was issued to Marvel. In response to the request, Marvel obtained a false New Jersey birth certificate bearing his name and mailed it to the agency. But someone at Access Health CT was doing their job and stopped Marvel from stealing further benefits.

Marvel is out on bond and is required to report to prison on December 1, 2022. One must “marvel” at how a Jamaican citizen who stole from America’s health benefits did not get sent directly to jail.

Today’s Fraud of the Day is based on an article “Fraudulent schemes always hurt the innocent by stander” published by The Gleaner on September 16, 2022

A Jamaican man has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in the United States and has been ordered to pay more than US$150,000 in restitution for making false statements to receive Medicaid benefits.

Fifty-year-old Marvel Johnson, who says he is the Bishop of the Apostolic Ark Pentecostal Church in the US, was sentenced on Thursday in a Connecticut court.
