Sarma Melngailis, the woman who created an empire with fancy restaurants that serve the elite raw vegan foods, is also the woman who sabotaged her own legacy in fine dining with hubris and greed. After being caught up in a scheme to attempt to make her dog immortal and giving the leader millions of dollars, she basically tanked her own business. Both of her restaurants closed in 2015 amidst staff walkouts, she was arrested and convicted for fraud in 2017. She was sentenced to prison on Riker’s Island.
