By Akshaya Nath: The Department of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has filed a case of corruption against a police constable for extortion. The cop allegedly took three daughters-in-law of a family in 2019 to a police station in Madurai and extorted a total of Rs 72,000 from their family.

The head constable identified as K Ramachandran, who was earlier posted to Koodal Podur Police station and now with Mathichiyam station, in Madurai, has been accused of taking the female family members of an accused named Ganesh from his residence and extracting money from them.

POLICE EXTORTED FAMILY FOR MONEY

In the complaint registered by the family members of the accused, they said that in the guise of an investigation, Ganesh’s wife Suvitha was taken into custody by Ramachandran in August 2019.

When the father of the accused went to the station to get Suvitha home, Ramachandran allegedly asked him to bring Rs 50,000 to the station the next day along with Suvitha.

Ganesh is a history-sheeter with various criminal cases against him in different police stations.

He also went to their house and took Duraiswamy’s two other daughters-in-law Chandraleka and Usha to Koodal Pudur police station as Suvitha had failed to present herself at the station.

The women were released only after Rs 50,000 and paid as a bribe.

Again in October 2019, he demanded Rs 30,000 from the family to save Ganesh. After bargaining, the amount was reduced to Rs 15,000 and it was paid to the cop via GPay.

The family revealed the policemen allegedly asked for bribes multiple times. The DVAC has filed a corruption case and is investigating the matter now.
