The Weld County Sheriff’s Office is searching for two men suspected of defrauding a local business out of nearly $30,000 of steel.

Around 4 p.m. Friday, deputies responded to a cold theft report at a steel business in unincorporated Weld County just north of Greeley, according to a sheriff’s office news release. The business owner said more than $27,000 worth of steel had been defrauded.

The owner reported a man he knew as George Smith of George’s Construction had made four significant purchases over the phone using a credit card within the last few weeks. The material was picked up by another man, known as Carlos Martinez.

Later, the purchases were flagged by the credit card company as fraud, and the company canceled the payments, the release said.

The suspects are using fake names and disguised their cellphone numbers by using an app. However, the business captured security footage of Martinez and the vehicle he used to pick up the rebar.

He is described as a white or Latino man of average height and build. He was last seen wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and a light blue baseball hat.
